Want to extend a belated shout out to Tanya/OCLES,INC who pulled a seat-back panel off her own e23 to sell me. Had been looking worldwide for a beige replacement panel for 18 months with zero success. She had it in my hands in about 3 days. Outstanding! Who does that?

BMW E32 7-Series Early vs. Newer Instrument Cluster Incompatibility

Last Updated: 09/08/2018

Parts Group: Instrument cluster
This article discusses the variations of electronics on the BMW E32 7-series: the 735i, 735iL and 750i ... also the 740i and 740iL although there's less likely to be confusion with those models since they only came wih the later variant.

If you're not here for the technical analysis but would rather buy a used unit from us, guaranteed to work and fit, then please select the link below. In buying and analyzing used parts, reading technical documentation, and focusing on our own three E32 cars, we now understand that there was a massive change as to the electronics of this model, with the early variant ending its production run in 01/1989 and the new variant being applied to cars made in 02/1989 and on.

The changes include the instrument cluster, which is why the early vs. late clusters are incompatible. The versions of the engine management system are also different. This has many implications; even the fuel pump relays are different. The old ones are orange and have 4 pins, whereas the new ones are black and have 8 pins.
